I don’t matter.
That’s where this whole thing started. I was living in NJ a few miles from where I grew up and had just turned forty one. Due for a midlife crisis any minute, I came to the realization that I don’t matter. I could die right now and with the exception of a few people who are close to me, the world would continue to spin as if I never existed.
So, I did what any rational person would do. I ran away. I packed up my family, sold our house and moved twelve hundred miles away to Tampa, Florida.
And That’s When I Met Dick
He lived a few houses down the street and was the first person I met after moving into our new home. From the first minute I met him, I knew he was someone extraordinary. It was in the way he spoke to my kids. The way he took me under his wing. The way he welcomed me into his home. And the way he became part of my family.
For the next year, Dick was my mentor. Unbeknownst to him. And for the next year I became a better human being.
Shortly after meeting Dick I wrote about him on my blog and the post went viral. Shortly after that I was asked to tell the story at Inbound in Boston and it was standing room only.
That was the moment when I realized I was not alone. People were starving for this message. Starving to make a difference. Starving to matter.
The Start of a Movement
What began as a chance meeting has now become a worldwide movement. People all over the globe doing something to help someone else in their world. People that are changing the world one good deed at a time. People who proudly state…
I am a Dick.
So, if you or someone you know is a Dick, share the story with us. We are always looking for inspiring guests for our podcast or stories for the upcoming book. And if not, it’s never to late for you to start.
